Abstract

The emergent new technologies provide teachers in higher education with new and powerful tools. By linking microcomputers with speech synthesis, speech recognition, videodisc, videotape and audio recorder, a new concept of an educational laboratory emerges. The microcomputer application programs allow teachers to create their own courseware packages and link them automatically to a courseware library. This courseware analyses students’ understanding of video, audio and other material, and directs them via optimal paths through the package. Students’ records are analysed and compared automatically and the results are presented to the teacher for examination. The application software makes extensive use of artificial intelligence, expert system principles and knowledge and database systems.
