Abstract

Employing the 1972 presidential campaign and “The Movement” as extended examples, tentative hypotheses are offered identifying the relationships between campaigns and movements. Since McGovern's lopsided defeat also constituted arepudiation by the electorate of “The Movement” on which his candidacy was built, this analysis examines, retrospectively, the options which were open to “The Movement” and offers hypotheses about relationships between presidential campaigns and protest movements.
