Poetic realizing as knowing

Pages 311-318 | Published online: 05 Jun 2009

Abstract

Although self‐sufficient, poetry provides knowledge, in the sense indicated by the phrase knowing what it is or by the word realization, of certain kinds of experience which are identified as themes in poems. We may know or realize thematic‐concepts in ordinary life experience, and in writing and reading poems. Themes, as objects of knowledge, cannot be separated from their instances.
