Exile as emergence: Frederick Douglass in Great Britain, 1845–1847

Pages 69-82 | Published online: 05 Jun 2009

Abstract

When Frederick Douglass fled into British exile in the summer of 1845, he was a popular but subordinate figure in the American abolition movement. When he returned to the United States in April, 1847, his Garrisonian colleagues acknowledged him, as an emerging leader. This essay examines Douglass’ experience in Britain in an effort to discover the factors accounting for his emergence to leadership status among American Garrisonians.
