Pages 83-91 | Published online: 05 Jun 2009

Abstract

From 1893 until his death in 1904, General John B. Gordon traveled widely in the East, Middle West, and South delivering a lecture entitled “The Last Days of the Confederacy.” This essay explores the popularity of the lecture, examines the mechanics of its reconciliatory tone, and discusses its possible implications for a nation fired by expansionist zeal.
