Alcestis and the rhetoric of departure

Because of her final words to Admetus, the motivation behind Alcetis’ self sacrifice has often been questioned—is it heroism or selfishness? Rhetorical analysis of this speech shows it to be the same heroic tradition as those of Andromache and Tecmessa. Like her literary predecessor's, Alcetis’ skill at persuasion (dianoia) reveals concern and affection for her husband.
