Booker T. Washington and the myth of heroic materialism

This article suggests that the traditional view of Booker T. Washington as a clever diplomat with an astonishing ability to ignore the realities of racism is inadequate. Seen from the stand‐pont of the myth critic, Washington's rhetoric illuminates the way in which cultural scenarios shape and restrict perception.
