The defeats of Judges Haynsworth and Carswell: Rejection of Supreme Court nominees

In the pre‐Watergate period of his presidency, Richard Nixon failed to win approval of two Supreme Court nominations in the short period of eight months. This article examines the rhetorical grounds available for opposition and support for such nominations and the rhetorical strategies employed by rhetors supporting and opposing Haynsworth and Carswell.
