Point of view in rhetorical situations: Classical and romantic contrasts and contemporary implications

Three perspectives on rhetorical situations are discussed and general relationships are drawn among these perspectives, assumptions of social interaction, and competing perceptions of language function. Classical and Romantic conceptions of rhetoric are contrasted to illustrate the range of these relationships, and these contrasts are discussed in light of contemporary ideals.
