Hoyt H. Hudson: Spokesman for the Cornell school of rhetoric

Pages 186-200 | Published online: 05 Jun 2009

Abstract

During the formative years of the Speech profession, Hoyt H. Hudson sought—along with other Cornellians—to make rhetoric the centerpiece of the discipline. He urged that invention be returned to its central place in rhetoric and that rhetoric be a part of a liberal; rather than a scientific or technical, education. In so doing, Hudson emerged as chief spokesman for the Cornell tradition.
