A review of irradiation induced re-solution in oxide fuels

Pages 243-249 | Published online: 19 Aug 2006

Abstract

The paper reviews the existing experimental evidence for irradiation induced re-solution and also possible explanations for the mechanism. The importance of re-solution is considered with regard to intragranular bubbles and the accumulation of gas on grain boundaries. It is concluded that re-solution is most effective at low temperatures and could account for the present concern over gas release in high burn-up water reactor fuel assemblies.
