The Impact of Infrastructure Expenditure Types on Regional Income in Turkey

Abstract

Infrastructure investments that enhance regional economic performance and competitiveness fall into two categories: economic and social. Economic infrastructure investments (i.e. highways, power generation and water facilities) can directly increase regional production potential, and social infrastructure investments (i.e. education and healthcare) can aid regional income by improving labour productivity. This study identifies how different types of infrastructure expenditures affect regional incomes in Turkey. As per results drawn from data of 2004–08, infrastructure expenditures enhance regional income in Turkey. Social infrastructure investments and education expenditures demonstrate greater impact on regional income.

L'investissement en infrastructure qui améliore la performance économique et la compétitivité régionales sont de deux ordres: économique et social. L'investissement en infrastructure économique (à savoir, en réseaux routiers et en installations de production d’énergie et d'alimentation en eau) peut favoriser la capacité de production éventuelle régionale, et l'investissement en infrastructure sociale (autrement dit, en éducation et en services de santé) peut augmenter le revenu régional en améliorant la productivité du travail. Cette présente étude identifie comment les différentes catégories de dépenses d'infrastructure influencent les revenus régionaux en Turquie. Comme c'est le cas pour les résultats provenant des données relatives à la période allant de 2004 à 2008, les dépenses d'infrastructure améliorent le revenu régional en Turquie. Les investissements en infrastructure sociale et les dépenses d’éducation font preuve d'un impact plus marqué sur le revenu régional.

Investitionen in die Infrastruktur zur Verbesserung der regionalen Wirtschaftsleistung und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit fallen unter zwei Kategorien: wirtschaftliche und soziale Investitionen. Investitionen in die wirtschaftliche Infrastruktur (d. h. Autobahnen, Kraftwerke und Wasserwerke) können das regionale Produktionspotenzial unmittelbar erhöhen, und Investitionen in die soziale Infrastruktur (d. h. Bildung und Gesundheitswesen) können das regionale Einkommen durch Verbesserung der Produktivität der Arbeitskräfte steigern. In dieser Studie wird untersucht, wie sich verschiedene Arten von Investitionen in die Infrastruktur auf das regionale Einkommen in der Türkei auswirken. Aus den Ergebnissen, die mithilfe von Daten der Jahre 2004–2008 gewonnen wurden, geht hervor, dass Investitionen in die Infrastruktur das regionale Einkommen in der Türkei verbessern. Investitionen in die soziale Infrastruktur und Bildungsausgaben wirken sich stärker auf das regionale Einkommen aus.

Las inversiones en infraestructura para mejorar el desempeño económico regional y la competitividad se dividen en dos categorías: económica y social. Las inversiones en infraestructura económica (p. ej., carreteras, producción de energía e instalaciones de agua) pueden aumentar directamente el potencial productivo regional, y las inversiones en infraestructura social (p. ej., educación y sanidad) pueden aumentar los ingresos regionales al mejorar la productividad laboral. En este estudio identificamos cómo afectan los diferentes tipos de gastos en infraestructura a los ingresos regionales en Turquía. Teniendo en cuenta los resultados extraídos de los datos de 2004–08, los gastos en infraestructura mejoran los ingresos regionales en Turquía. Las inversiones en infraestructura social y los gastos en educación demuestran mayores efectos en los ingresos regionales.
