Abstract

HOWELLS J. (1987) Developments in the location, technology and industrial organization of computer services: some trends and research issues, Reg. Studies 21, 493–503. Computer services are growing rapidly in mature industrial economics. Turnover is expanding quickly, new firm formation rates are high and employment growth is continuing to expand. In spatial terms, computer services in the UK remain concentrated in the attractive areas of southern England. Key trends in the computer service industry are discussed, including new entrants, the role of large corporations, internalization and externalization processes, the importance of hardware companies and prospective changes in location. Finally a number of research issues in industrial location are raised.

Studies 21, 493–503. Dans les économies industrielles développées les services informatiques sont en pleine expansion. Les chiffres d'affaires augmentent rapidement, le taux de création de nouvelles entreprises est très élevé et le niveau de l'emploi ne cesse de s'améliorer. Sous un optique régional les services informatiques au Royaume-Uni restent concentrés dans les zones les plus avantageuses du Sud-Est. Les tendances clés dans l'industrie des services informatiques se voient discuter, y compris les nouveaux venus, les rôles des grandes sociétés, les processus d'internalisation et d'externalisation, l'importance des sociétés de matériel informatique et les déménagements éventuels futurs. Pour conclure on soulève quelques questions à rechercher au sujet de la localisation industrielle.

Studies 21, 493–503. Komputerdienste nehmen in vollentwickelten Industriewirt-schaftssystemen rasch zu. Der Umszatz erhöht sich schnell, der verhältnissmässige Anteil der Neubildung von Firmen ist hoch, und der Bestand an Arbeitsplätzen nimmt weiter zu. Hinsichtlich des Raumes bleiben Komputerdienste im Vereinigten Königreich weiterhin auf die attraktiven Gebiete Südenglands konzentriert. Haupttendenzen in der Komputerdienstleistungsindustrie werden diskutiert, einschliesslich neu hinzukommender Firmen, der Rolle grosser Handelsgesellschaften, Prozessen, die auf Internalisierung und Externalisierung abzielen, der Bedeutung von Hardwaregesellschaften und voraussichtlichen Standort-veränderungen. Abschliessend werden eine Anzahl von Forschungsfragen in Bezug auf Industriestandorte aufgeworfen.
