Spatial Variations in New Manufacturing Plant Openings: Some Empirical Evidence from Greece

This research deals with the determinants of regional variation in new plant openings in Greek manufacturing industries over the period 1980-91. Key findings of this first detailed attempt to do so in a Greek context relate to the significant direct effects of regional specialization, the extent of local production links and investment in public infrastructure on new manufacturing activity. Confirming research findings in other countries, the results obtained here indicate small firm presence, the local supply of skilled labour, and wealth and labour productivity differentials across regions to be significant and positive influences on new firm formation.

Cet article traite des facteurs déterminants de la variation régionale de la création d'entreprises industrielles en Grèce sur la période de 1980 à 1991. Les résultats clés de cette première étude détaillée de la Grèce se rapportent aux effets directs de la spécialisation, de l'ampleur des échanges inter-industriels locaux et de l'investissement dans l'équipement collectif sur la création d'entreprises industrielles. Tout en venant à l'appui des recherches effectuées dans d'autres pays, les résultats obtenus laissent voir l'influence considérable et positive de la présence des petites entreprises, de la disponibilité d'un bassin d'emploi qualifié, et des écarts de richesse et de la productivité-travail régionaux sur la création d'entreprises.

Die vorliegende Forschungsarbeit befaßt sich mit den bestimmenden Faktoren regionaler Abweichungen bei Eröffnungen neuer Fabrikanlagen in der herstellenden Industrie Griechenlands im Zeitraum 1980‐1993. Die Hauptbefunde dieses ersten, ins einzelne gehenden Versuchs, dies im Zusammenhang mit Griechenland anzugehen, beziehen sich auf die signifikanten, direkten Auswirkungen regionaler Spezialisierung, das Ausmaß örtlicher Produktionsverknüpfungen und Investierungen in öffentlichen Infrastrukturen auf neue Herstelleraktivität. Die hier erzielten Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, daß die Anwesenheit kleiner Firmen, das Vorhandensein gelernter Arbeitskräfte am Orte, sowie Wohlstands- und Arbeitsleistungsunterschiede in allen Regionen signifikante und positive Einflüsse auf Firmenneubildung ausüben, und bestätigen damit Forschungsergebnisse in anderen Ländern.
