Abstract
This contribution records some little known facts concerning the earlier and most recent history of the Makapansgat hominid site. Some factors that have influenced this history are considered and a chronicle of the valley and its environs is provided. The impact of the historical determinants on more recent events in the valley is outlined. These impacts have created important management issues which will have to be dealt with as the site is scheduled to become a World Heritage Site.
