Abstract
The application in recent years of a variety of dating techniques to the Sterkfontein hominid deposits has yielded exciting results. A new magnetostratigraphy for the entire sequence awaits publication and absolute dates from cosmogenic isotopes have been announced. The first analyses based on the uranium-lead decay series are nearing completion and new programmes of research, including further sampling for new cosmogenic and U-Pb analyses, are in progress. Based on current knowledge, the age of the Member 2/Jacovec Cavern deposits ranges from around 3.3 to 4.17 myr while the upper level of Member 4 (the ‘Mrs Ples’ travertine) dates as young as 2.14 myr.
