EARLY OBSERVATIONS AND HISTORICAL NOTES ON THE AGULHAS CURRENT CIRCULATION

Summary

Some early voyages off the east coast of South Africa are reviewed to highlight the discovery of the Agulhas Current, and the progress towards modern understanding of the circulation system is illustrated by a series of charts. It is shown that the main elements of the Agulhas Current system were in fact known by the early nineteenth century.
