FOUNDATIONS STRONG AND LASTING—HERSCHEL'S WORK IN EDUCATION AT THE CAPE

SUMMARY

During his four years at the Cape of Good Hope in the mid—1830s, Sir John Herschel became very involved in a major scheme to restructure the fragmented and largely ineffectual education system of the Colony. The result was the establishment, soon after his departure in 1838, of one of the earliest and best structured state education systems in the world.
