An unusual dermatophyte from horses in New Zealand

Pages 124-125 | Published online: 09 Jul 2009

Abstract

The main aetiological agent of equine ringworm in New Zealand appears to be a species of Trichophyton similar to T. equinum but lacking in the characteristic nutritional requirement for nicotinic acid. Lesions and the manner of hair invasion are both similar to those of T. equinum. In morphology the fungus also resembles T. equinum but colonies lack the fringe of pigment around the submerged peripheral growth. Attempts at inducing a perfect stage were unsuccessful. Until more is known about the fungus it is being regarded as a variety of T. equinum. Strains of T. equinum showing a requirement for nicotinic acid have not yet been recovered in New Zealand.
