Differentiation of capsules and hyphae in clubs of bovine sulphur granules

Abstract

Comparative observations of Actinomyces bovis granules were made with electron, phase and light microscopes before and after treatments with KOH and lysozyme. The results suggest that the capsular polysaccharide is of a different chemical structure than that of the cell wall. Presumably the capsule, which is less sensitive to lysozyme after KOH treatment, contains less 0-acetyl groups. Further separation of the capsule into different chemical moieties is suggested by the differential affinity of certain layers of the capsule for Ca3(PO4)2.

Résumé

Des grains d'Actinomyces bovis sont observés comparativement en microscopie électronique et optique (éclairage classique et contraste de phase) avant et après traitement des grains à la potasse et au lysozyme. Les résultats tendent à montrer que le polyoside capsulaire des massues présente une structure chimique différente de celle de la paroi cellulaire. On peut présumer que la capsule qui est moins sensible au lysozyme après traitement à la potasse, contient moins de groupements O-acetyl. L'affinité différentielle de certaines couches de la capsule pour Ca3(PO4)2 suggère l'éventualité d'une séparation de la capsule des massues en différents constituants chimiques.
