The effects of soil enrichment on the isolation of keratinophilic fungi from soil samples

Abstract

The effects of keratin enrichment on the isolation of keratinophilic fungi from soil by the hair-baiting technique has been investigated. Pretreatment of 199 samples of Pacific Island soils with sterile cowhorn shavings increased the yield of isolates of M. gypseum complex from less than 15% to 78% of samples. K. ajelloi appeared to be rare in soils from Oceania. It was not isolated from unenriched samples and only 2 strains were recovered after enrichment. The recovery of T. terrestre was not affected by enrichment. It is suggested that cowhorn shavings have a specific effect on members of the genus Microsporum and that enrichment with other forms of keratin might increase the recovery of other keratinophilic species.
