Sexual stimulation between Arthroderma simii Stockd., Mackenzie & Austwick and related species

Pages 176-181 | Published online: 09 Jul 2009

Abstract

Isolates of 23 species of dermatophytes and other keratinophilic fungi have been cultured in combination with ‘+’ and ‘-’ strains of Arthroderma simii. A zone of increased growth was formed at the junction of the colonies in some crosses and the mycelium in this zone frequently contained cleistothecial initials. The species have been divided into 4 groups, depending on the degree of stimulation observed: 1. Non-reactors (A. ciferrii, Ctenomyces serratus, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum distortum, M. equinum, Trichophyton tonsurans); 2. Weak reactors (A. cuniculi, A. lenticularum, A. quadrifidum, A. tuberculatum); 3. Moderate reactors (A. gertleri, A. uncinatum, M. audouinii, Nannizzia cajetani, N. fulva, N. gypsea, N. incurvata, N. obtusa, N. persicolor, T. rubrum); and 4. Strong reactors (A. benhamiae, T. equinum, T. mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes, T. mentagrophytes var. erinacei). The ‘+’ strain of A. simii reacted only with 1 mating strain of the heterothallic Nannizzia and Arthroderma spp. tested and the ‘-’ strain reacted with the other.

Results suggest that hormonal substances responsible for cleistothecium formation are very similar in some of these species and that in this respect A. simii is more closely related to Nannizzia and Microsporum spp. than to some Trichophyton and saprophytic Arthroderma species.

Keine Reaktion nachzuweisen (A. ciferrii, Ctenomyces serratus, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum distortum, M. equinum, Trichophyton tonsurans); 2. Schwache Reaktion nachzuweisen (A. cuniculi, A. lenticularum, A. quadrifidum, A. tuberculatum); 3. Mäßige Reaktion nachzuweisen (A. gertleri, A. uncinatum, M. audouinii, Nannizzia cajetani, N. fulva, N. gypsea, N. incurvata, N. obtusa, N. persicolor, T. rubrum); und 4. Starke Reaktion nachzuweisen (A. benhamiae, T. equinum, T. mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes, T. mentagrophytes var. erinacei).
