Summary
Eighteen to nineteen enzymatic fractions of Aspergillus fumigatus were identified by immunoelectrophoregrams of hyperimmune rabbit serum. A comparison was made with the order of appearance of antienzymatic antibodies in the serum of humans suffering from aspergillosis. Such human sera contained a variable number of precipitins as revealed by agar precipitation using the technique of protein coloration (amidoschwarz). Despite the great zoological gulf between man and rabbit and considerable differences in the technique of antigen impregnation the following strongly antigenic enzymes were found to be common to both rabbit and man viz. chymotrypsin I and II; catalase and glucuronidase I and II; amylase was in a borderline position.
This work demonstrates the usefulness of studying, in animals, the serum precipitins elaborated in mycoses and also of the investigation of new diagnostic methods based on antibody production.
