Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinacei in hedgehog nests

Abstract

The linings of 60 hedgehog winter nests, in which these animals hibernate, were sampled for Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinacei, and the fungus was found in 14. Six infected nests were occupied by infected animals and 4 uninfected nests by uninfected animals. It was shown in the laboratory that the fungus could survive for at least a year in dry nest debris, but for less than a week if the material became damp. None of the 4 summer enests, occupied for only a day or so, was infected. It is suggested that infected nest material is a possible source of indirect cross-infection with ringworm among both hedgehogs and man.
