Experimental histoplasmosis in embryonated eggs

II. Influence of the route of inoculation on the distribution of lesions

Pages 26-31 | Published online: 09 Jul 2009

Abstract

Parenteral inoculation of chick embryos with the yeast phase of Histoplasma capsulatum resulted in vascular dissemination of the organism with the production of granulomas in various organs and tissues. The inflammatory response consisted almost exclusively of histiocytes and fibroblasts. Necrosis of the affected tissues was observed only rarely and fibrous encapsulation of the lesions did not occur. Chick embryos inoculated intracerebrally had massive accumulations of yeast-packed macrophages in the subarachnoid space with lesser involvement of the ventricles and cerebral cortex. Involvement was generally confined to the brain and adjacent tissue within the skull.

The histopathologic features are presented in detail and compared to those described in human lesions and in lesions produced in other experimental animals.

Sumario
