Abstract

A comparative ultrastructural study of the wild, pigmented hyphae and the mutant, albino ones of M. cookei was made to elucidate the distribution of pigments, and it confirmed earlier observations on Trichophyton violaceum. The pigmented hyphae with dark outer coatings outside the cell wall exhibited many ordinary mitochondria as in higher plants, while the mutant, albino hyphae frequently had irregular, unusual mitochondria with few cristae. Glycogen granules were seen mainly in the large albino hyphae. Occasionally intrahyphal hyphae growing in a host cell were also found in pigmented hyphae.
