Growth of Trichophyton mentagrophytes on natural substrates

Abstract

The ability of Trichophyton mentagrophytes to compete as a soil saprophyte was investigated. In loamy sand experimentally inoculated with T. mentagrophytes, growth was inhibited and survival declined steadily during the 5 week observation period. When soil was supplemented with human callus, the number of recovered reproductive units of the fungus decreased, although colonization of the callus was observed macroscopically. Enrichment of soil with human hair resulted in a relatively constant recovery of reproductive units. Microaleuriospores were produced in abundance on the hair.
