The frequent isolation of Phialophora verrucosa and Phialophora pedrosoi from natural sources

Abstract

Thirty-one strains of Phialophora verrucosa and 34 of P. pedrosoi were isolated from 328 samples of plant debris, soil and other materials via inoculated animals and by direct culture.

From 32 of 64 samples of non-living materials from trees and rotten palm-tree trunks, 1 or both species have been isolated. P, verrucosa was obtained from 7 of 10 wasp nests. Positive results were recorded from 10·8% of 120 samples of soil which usually contained plant debris.

The pathogenicity of the strains recovered from natural sources is presumably based on the mycological and biological similarity between them and those isolated from man. The frequent isolation from nature of the causal organisms of chromoblastomycosis contrasts with the rarity of the disease in Uruguay.

Resumen

Phialophora verrucosa ha sido cultivada en 31 oportunidades y P. pedrosoi en 34 de 328 muestras de restos de vegetales, suelo y otros materiales. Dichos cultivos fueron logrados mediante inoculación de animales y por cultivo directo.

De 32 entre 64 muestras de materiales no vivos de árboles y troncos de palmeras en desintegración una o ambas especies fueron obtenidas. P. verrucosa fue aislada de 7 entre 10 avisperos. Resultados positivos para una o ambas especies se lograron en 10·8% de 120 muestras de suelo que generalmente contenían restos vegetales.

El poder patógeno de las cepas logradas se presume basados en las similitudes micológicasy biológicas existentes entre ellas y las aisladas del hobre. El frecuente aislamiento de la naturaleza de los hongos causantes de la cromoblastomicosis contrasta con la rareza de dicha enfermedad en el Uruguay.
