Characterization and mating reactions of clinical isolates of Trychophyton mentagrophytes and T. rubrum which produce a diffusible brownish pigment

Abstract

This paper reports on the factors required for pigment production and on the mating type of 6 clinical isolates of Trichophyton which produce a diffusible brownish pigment. Three isolates were identified as T. mentagrophytes and three as T. rubrum. Pigment was produced in the presence of L-phenylalanine or L-tyrosine but no pigment or growth occurred in the presence of quinic or shikimic acids. The T. mentagrophytes isolates reacted as A(+) mating type and the T. rubrum as a(-) when paired with Arthroderma simii A(+) and a(-) tester strains.

Resumen

Se investigaron los factores necesarios para la producción de pigmento y las reacciones de aparea miento de 6 copas de orígen clínico de tricofitos productores de pigmento soluble de color pardo. Tres de las cepas fueron caracterizadas como T. mentagrophytes y tres como T. rubrum. El pigmento soluble se produjo en presencia de L-fenilalanina o de L-tirosina. Las cepas no crecieron ni produjeron pigmento en la presencia de ácido quínico o shiquímico. Las cepas de T. mentagrophytes reaccionaron como tipo A(+) y las de T. rubrum como tipo a(-) al aparearse con cepas testigo de tipo A(+) y a(-) de Arthroderma simii.
