Resistance of the Candida albicans filamentous cycle to environmental change

Abstract

The filamentous growth cycle in C. albicans was resistant to changes in environment brought about either by the serial transfer of growing cells to fresh nutrients or by sudden changes of temperature after the first h of growth. In further experiments older culture filtrates, exhausted of their ability to induce mycelial growth, were reactivated by addition of fresh nutrients or water.

The data provided evidence against the existence of both a mycelial stimulatory and inhibitory compound in the growth medium. It is concluded that although the environment initially dictates what proportion of blastospores are committed to filamentation it has no further effect on the process.

Après la première heure de croissance, le cycle de développement de C. albicans sous la forme filamenteuse n'est pas affecté par des changement de conditions de cultures consistant, soit dans le transfert répété des cellules en croissance dans un nouveau milieu, soit par de brusques changements de température.

Au cours d'expériences ultérieures, on a montré que le filtrat de cultures plus âgées, qui avait perdu sa possibilité d'induire la croissance sous forme mycélienne a été réactivé par l'addition d'élements nutritifs ou d'eau.

Les résultats fournissent des preuves contrie l'existence de substances du milieu de culture inhibant ou stimulant la croissance sous forme mycélienne. On en conclut que, bien que les conditions initiales dictent la proportion de blastospores qui vont filamenter, elles n'ont pas d'effet sur le processus ultérieur.
