Nutritional competition between Candida albicans and 6 bacteria frequently found in the gastro-intestinal tract, together with the influence of the bacterial supernatant on yeast growth were studied. Our results showed that the amount of available carbohydrates in vitro was an important growth factor. Three of the 6 carbohydrates enhanced growth. The hypothesis of an antifungal substance produced by bacteria cannot be excluded though a 10% concentration of bacterial supernatant had no inhibitory effect on fungal growth and germination. In the presence of bacteria, the percentage of germ tube formation was markedly reduced in horse serum after 4 h incubation at 37°C.
Abstract
La compétition nutritionnelle entre Candida albicans et 6 bactéries fréquemment rencontrées dans le tube digetif ainsi que l'influence de ces dernières sur le pouvoir de filamentation de la levure ont été étudiées. De plus, l'effet du surnageant des cultures bactériennes sur la croissance et la filamentation du champignon a été recherché. In vitro, la source énergétique en hydrates de carbone est un facteur important dans la multiplication du C. albicans. L'hypothèse d'une substance bactérienne antifongique ne peut pas être exclue et mérite une étude plus poussée, bien que le surnageant bactérien, à la concentration de 10%, ne joue pas de rôle inhibiteur sur la croissance ni sur la filamentation du C. albicans. En présence de bactéries, une diminution de 52% du pouvoir de filamentation du C. albicans s'observe dans le sérum de cheval après 4 h d'incubation à 37°C.
