Summary
The subject of opportunistic fungal infection due to species of Zygomycetes is reviewed historically, especially in regard to systemic infection in patients with chronic debilitating disease such as malignant lymphoma, multiple myeloma, cirrhosis, carcinoma, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. A case of double rhinocerebral infection, diagnosed by histological methods and confirmed by mycological techniques in an uncontrolled diabetic patient, is reported. Two fungal agents were recovered from biopsy material of ulcerous palate. The first was identified as Rhizopus arrhizus and the second as Candida albicans. The importance of early diagnosis of opportunistic fungal infection in patients with chronic debilitating disease or undergoing treatment with antimetabolites, corticosteroids, antibiotics and the like, is discussed.
