The nototanaid genus Tanaissus is shown to include two species in British and west European waters, T. danica and T. lilljeborgi , the first being originally described as Leptochelia danica . The shapes of the female cheliped, pleon and mandibular molar process offer diagnostic taxonomic characters for identification, and the habitus of males is very different in these two species. Previous records of T. lilljeborgi from Britain are largely divisible into the northern/sublittoral T. danica and the southern/intertidal T. lilljeborgi , while the Shetland species T. elongatus is synonymized with T. danica .
