Abstract
1. The platelet agglutinating effect of the following three new heparin substitutes was studied: a hyaluronic acid sulphuric acid ester, a xylan sulphuric acid ester (Thrombocid) and an alginic acid sulphuric acid ester (Paritol). They were all found to agglutinate the platelets and are too toxic for clinical use.
2. The agglutination test is discussed in the light of some discrepancies found between the behaviour of rabbit blood and human blood. Citrate appears to stabilize the human platelets.
