Paper Chromatography of Porphyrin Pigments

Abstract

1. A simple and time-sparing procedure for the paper chromatographic separation of porphyrin pigments has been described.

2. 2–6 lutidine, which is completely miscible with water at temperatures up to 40^o C, has been found to be easier to handle than the 2–4/2–5 lutidine used by Nicholas & Rimington (1949, 1951).

3. In contrast to the findings of Nicholas & Rimington (1951), a system containing NH3 vapor is found to give better separation of the porphyrins.
