Abstract
Andersen, D. 1970. The Use of Measurement of Central Venous Pressure in the Selection of Patients with Massive Gastroduodenal Haemorrhage for Emergency Operation. Scand. J. Gastroent. 5, 25-32.
In previous work criteria were established for: 1. Recognition of poor risk patients including patients with potential dangerous haemorrhage. 2. Diagnosis, by CVP-measurements, of major arterial haemorrhage. This work reports the results of a policy for treatment based on these criteria. Poor risk patients were transfused according to CVP, and patients with major arterial haemorrhage were urgently operated on. The criteria served the purpose intended. Exsanguination was prevented. Transfusion therapy was adequate, without overtransfusion or unrelieved shock. Patients operated on had lesions amenable to surgery, although no effort was made to reach a local diagnosis beforehand. The indications were observed closely.
