Abstract

Hultén, L., Kewenter, J., Persson, E. & Åhrén, C. 1970. Vitamin B12 Absorption in Ileostomy Patients after Operation for Ulcerative Colitis. Scand. J. Gastroent. 5, 113-116.

Examinations of 22 ileostomy patients operated on for ulcerative colitis with panproctocolectomy and ileostomy were made at various intervals for Schilling test. Low values were seen in 4/5 of the cases of ‘short-term ileostomy patients’, but in only 1/4 of the ‘long-term ileostomy patients’. The possibility of a changed microbe balance in the terminal ileum after ileostomy, as the cause of the apparently temporarily lowered vitamin Bi2-absorption is discussed.
