A comparison of the immunoglobulin levels with a Danish and British control series showed that there was a significantly higher mean level of IgG and IgM, but not of IgA in Indian controls. Turnover studies with 125I- labelled IgG were made in 28 cases of tropical sprue and 10 Indian control subjects. The fractional catabolic rate was found to be decreased in 3, low normal in 3, and higher than normal in 7 patients, 3 of whom had an associated protein loss in the gut. In the remaining 15 patients it was normal. IgG synthesis was decreased in 4, elevated in 2 and normal in 22 cases. Two patients showed a complete absence of IgA globulin in the serum; 43 % suffering from tropical sprue had a decreased IgM level in the serum.
