Abstract

Jalan, K. N., Brunt, P. W., Maclean, N. & Sircus, W. 1970. Benign Solitary Ulcer of the Rectum — a Report of 5 Cases. Scand. J. Gastroent. 5, 143-147.

Five cases of solitary rectal ulcer are described. There is a scarcity of reports in the literature, which suggests the condition is rare or not easily identified. The common clinical. features are rectal and left iliac fossa pain and rectal bleeding, often with little change in bowel habit or constitutional disturbance. The course is chronic and the disease is extraordinarily resistant to treatment, recurring after local resection. The aetiology is unknown, but may be a sequel of idiopathic proctitis. The histology of the ulcers shows nonspecific chronic inflammatory change, and there is no evidence of malignancy, granulomatous disease or specific infection.
