Restraint causes a significant decrease in the sulphation of polysaccharides in rats. This effect, however, appears, only when restraint has been sufficiently effective to cause ulceration, and the stronger the inhibition the greater the ulcus frequence. Restraint does not change the turnover rates of sulphopolysaccharides. Feeding of cinchophen and salicylic acid did not inhibit sulphation, but did not cause ulcers either. These results indicate that inhibition of sulphation during ulcerogenesis is merely a result rather than cause.
