Gastrectomized patients with an increased number of microorganisms in the jejunal contents were given [24-14C] cholyl [1-14C] glycine. Jejunal aspirates were collected 24 and 48 hours after administration in connection with a test meal. Extensive deconjugation of glycine conjugates was demonstrated, as only 6-18 % of the [24-14C] labelled bile acid remaining in the jejunal contents after 24 hours was present in the form of double-labelled glycocholic acid which was administered originally. Unconjugated bile acids were found in trace amounts only in the jejunal contents from two of the patients. The rate of formation of deoxycholic acid varied.
