The combination of solute transport and osmosis between plasma and 5 % glucose solution instilled into the peritoneal cavity has been studied in rabbits. Increased osmolarity and net water influx in the peritoneal compartment were seen to occur concomitantly, both presumably resulting from a net solute influx from plasma. In accordance with previous studies, the present experiments failed to demonstrate a solvent drag effect of osmosis. Since osmosis in the present situation is effectuated by solute activity gradients built up in the membrane rather than between plasma and peri-toneal solutions as bulk phases, the main part of the water is likely to pass through the same pathway as NaCl and glucose. It seems reasonable to conclude that osmosis through a highly permeable membrane like peritoneum is a matter of diffisusion.
