Abstract

Wasastjerna, C., Thodén, C. J., Ekelund, P. & Haltia, K. 1970. The Bile Canaliculi in Cytological Aspiration Biopsies from Patients with Liver Disorders. Scand. J. Gastroent. 5, 327-331.

Cytological liver specimens from 95 patients were stained by the May-Grünwald-Giemsa method, and for naphthylamidase. The latter method provides a practical diagnostic means for examination of the bile cannaliculi. These were found to form a regular network between the cells in normal livers. The canaliculi were disrupted in most cases of hepatitis. In cholestasis, canalicular dilatation and diverticula were found. Changes were also noted in fatty liver, and in cirrhosis.
