Abstract

Rask-Madscn, J. & Schwartz, M. 1970. Absorption of 51Cr-EDTA in Ulcerative Colitis Following Rectal Instillation. Scand. J. Gastroent. 5, 361-368.

Ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic acid labelled with 51Cr (51Cr-EDTA) is practically non-absorbable from the colonic mucosa of normal individuals following rectal instillation. In ulcerative colitis, however, its net absorption is considerable. Its magnitude may be determined by measuring the urinary radioactivity through a 48-hour period after rectal instillation of 51Cr-EDTA, since the substance is eliminated by the kidneys at the same rate as inulin. Determination of the absorption of 51Cr-EDTA seems to be a suitable clinical-physiological method for investigating the permeability of the colonic mucosa.
