The lymphatics of the ileum were obstructed in 40 rats. In the acute phase manifest changes were observed in the initial lymphatics, in their endothelial cells and cell junctions, as well as in the structure and cells of the lamina propria. Inflammatory changes were slight. The findings were similar to those seen in intestinal lymphangiectasia. Prominent inflammatory reaction, often complicated by a fistulous infection and ileal obstruction, was noted after a month of lymphatic obstruction, especially in rats in which no lymphatic recanalisation occurred. Very large macrophages, monocytoid cells, plasma cells, and lymphocytes were more numerous. Many changes explained by the disturbed lymphatic function and absorption were noted. Long-lasting lymphatic obstruction had many features in common with regional enteritis.
