Abstract
Kylberg, F. 1970. Gastric Evacuation and Propulsive Intestinal Motility in Experimental Perforation Peritonitis. Scand. J. Gastroent. 5, 593-601.
Gastric evacuation and intestinal propagation were recorded quantitatively in 391 albino rats 24 and 72 hours after division of the colon and caecum, causing peritonitis. Intact and laparotomized rats were used for comparison. Gastrointestinal motility was registered quantitatively by means of an inert radioisotope. After 24 hours, marked retardation of gastrointestinal motility was observed, while after 3 days these functions were accelerated in comparison with the laparotomy group. The initial inhibition is discussed. A combination of humoral and neurogenic effects in association with inflammatory irritation and endotoxin shock may be responsible. The accelerated propagation could be a result of increasing liberation of biologically active amines from destroyed intestinal cells.
