Abstract

Desai, H. G., Zaveri, M. P. & Antia, F. P. 1970. Intravenous Histamine Test with Fixed Doses of Histamine. Minimal Dose of Histamine for Maximal Acid Secretion. Scand. J. Gastroent. 5, 617-620.

Intravenous histamine tests were performed in 20 control subjects and 20 patients with duodenal ulcer from India by administering 0.8, 1.2, 1.6, 2.0, 2.4, 2.8 mg/hr doses of histamine acid phosphate (HAP) on different days. The results showed that 2.0 mg/hr or 40 jig/kg/hr dose of HAP is the minimal amount which stimulates maximal acid secretion in ‘underweight’ subjects from India. The minimal dose of histamine for maximal acid secretion showed a positive correlation with the maximal acid secretory capacity of the stomach, i. e. a higher dose of histamine was required for those with a larger parietal cell mass. Administration of supramaximal dose on different days showed a reduction in acid output.
