Abstract
Binder, Vibeke. 1970. A Comparison between Clinical State, Macroscopic and Microscopic Appearances of Rectal Mucosa, and Cytologic Picture of Mucosal Exudate in Ulcerative Colitis. Scand. J. Gastroent. 5, 627-632.
85 cases of ulcerative colitis were examined by four methods: evaluation of the clinical state, sigmoidoscopy, histological examination of the rectal mucosa, and cytologic examination of the rectal mucosal exudate. The results are correlated. It is concluded that the methods are supplements to each other, and that, especially in the cases where the clinical state is inactive or slightly active, it is of great importance to have a cytologic as well as a histological evaluation, since the results thereof may be decisive of the diagnosis. In moderate and very active stages of the disease, the histological examinations may improve the possibilities of arriving at a correct classification and create better opportunities for following the course of the disease.
