Phenol red (PR) and polyethylene-14C glycol (PEG-14C) were compared as nonabsorbable indicators by using them together in the same solution instilled into human stomach. The ratios of initial and final concentrations of both the marker substances compared favourably with each other, giving significantly equal information about volume changes. However, PEG-14C exhibits features which commend its use in preference to PR: 1) PEG-14C is more readily measured than PR, and 2) in PR analysis there may be an interference from coloured samples, whereas the presence of any chromogens does not affect sample-counting efficiency.
