Abstract

Danö, P., Olsen, J. & Vejlsgaard, R. 1973. Giardia Intestinalis. A Prospective Investigation of the Prevalence in Denmark. Scand. J. Gastroent. 8, 151-154.

The prevalence of Giardia intestinalis is high in places with poor hygienic standards, falling as hygienic conditions improve. The pathogenicity varies, the symptoms being predominantly gastrointestinal. How often the infestation leads to objective gastrointestinal findings, and how often primarily gastrointestinal diseases prepare the way for the infestation is not known. The diagnosis can only be established by examination of the duodenal aspirate and small-intestinal biopsies for trophozoites, and of faeces for cysts of Giardia intestinalis. Our investigation comprising 190 patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, a group in which a higher prevalence than that found in a group of healthy persons might be expected, revealed Giardia intestinalis in only one patient, corresponding to a prevalence of 0.5 %. The possible reasons for this are discussed.
